Minutes 2014/11

Divine Mercy Women’s Guild - November 10, 2014

The meeting was called to order by President Michele Urban at 6:45 and began with a prayer by Elaine Giacomo, Prayer Advisor.   There were 27 members present.

Reports:
Yvonne Murray moved that the Secretary’s report be accepted as posted on the Blog, which was seconded by Karen Bannister and passed by vote of the members present. Corresponding Secretary, Yvonne Murray reported sending out two cards.  Treasurer, Karen Bannister reported that at the end of the 2013-14 year there was $7076.18 in the Guild account and at the end of September the account amounted to $7371.48.

Old Business:
1.  Holiday Stroll – All chairmen reported that their areas were on track, and where help was needed, signup sheets were passed out.  The 3-4 dozen cookies for the Bake Table cookie trays need to be at the Parish Hall by 8:30 on Friday, November 20th, but other baked goods can be brought to Bass Hall on Saturday.  The Hall will be open for set up on Friday from 10-4:00, and will open at 7:30 on Saturday.  We should be out by 3:30. Beth asked for card tables to use in the Café.  The students from St. Pat’s will be asked to remain at their table instead of roaming the Hall as they did last year trying to sell their raffle tickets.

2.  Helping Hands – Joyce Schmidt reported that all continues to be quiet in that area.

3.  Holiday Trees in Peterborough – Lauren Martin described the committee’s plans for our entry.  The event is scheduled from December 12-14.  There is to be an adult reception with refreshments on Friday night, December 12th for a fee of $20.00 in advance, $25.00 at the door. Saturday the display will be open from 8-5:00, and Sunday from 10-3:00 for a fee of $5.00 with a family limit of $25.00.

4.  Blood Drive – Kathy Sullivan announced that the drive this year will be on December 12th at the Congregational Church from 12-5:00.  Needing sandwich makers, escorts, and people at the registration table, she passed out a sign-up sheet.

5.  Christmas Potluck – It is scheduled for December 1st with Tuesday, November 25th as the deadline to RSVP to Yvonne Murray.  It was decided to invite the Knights this year, and Michelle will send an invitation.

Refreshments were served by Connie Lebel, Joyce Schmidt, Elaine Giacomo, and Grace Hartman.

New Business:
1.  Budget Approval – Karen Bannister presented the budget for the 2014-15 year. It was reviewed line by line,

and a few changes were made, increasing the overall budget by $550.00. Elaine moved, seconded by Yvonne, that it should be accepted with those changes. The vote passed.

2.  Guild Storage - Michelle read a letter from Gail Caron telling the Guild that we need to find alternative storage space as the church property is now for sale. Some of the materials we use for the Fair will not return to the Parish Hall, and the Craft group will meet to sort out their supplies and reorganize the closet.

3.  Food Bank Envelope - $127.00.

The meeting closed at 8:45 with a prayer by Elaine.

Respectfully submitted
Sue Koziell, Secretary

Minutes 2014/10

Divine Mercy Women’s Guild - October 13, 2014

Michelle Urban called the meeting to order at 6:45 and began with a prayer by Elaine Giacomo. 19 members of the Guild were present.  Michelle introduced Mike Barrett from the Knights of Columbus who gave us an overview of their mission which centers on raising money for charity. He expressed the hope that the Knights and Guild could have a working relationship in church related endeavors.

Reports:

Jean Frechette moved that the Secretary’s report be accepted as written and posted on the Blog.  Joyce Schmidt seconded, and the motion passed.  Corresponding Secretary Yvonne Murray read thank you cards she received for the First Communion Reception, the Graduation Breakfast, Msgr Gerry’s Birthday gift, Deacon Dennis’ Ordination gift, and prayers for Edna Drasba’s son. There was no Treasurer’s report as Karen Bannister was absent.  A member asked why she was absent again and discussion ensued as to whether we need a new treasurer if it is getting to be too much for her.  Michelle will inquire.

Old Business:

1.  Holiday Stroll – All chairmen reported that everything is on track and Michelle reported that Karen as overall chairman has gone to the general meeting.

Crafts:  In good shape overall and we will finish up the recipe books at our next session.

Cafe:  Beth reported they are all set with no big changes.  When asked about chowder, it will be sold by                                          the pint as take out only. Connie Lebel volunteered to make a third soup, especially if it cold.

Bake Table:  Janice McKensie will have sign-up sheets at the November Meeting asking for cookies for                                        the cookie trays made each year.  Usually we have 20-25 which sell very well. Six small ones go                                         to the other churches.

Raffle Baskets:  Cheryl Lastrina reported she and Linda Caracappa are working on the baskets.  The Gift                                              Card Tree and Homemade Food Basket are popular items.  An apron was donated by Simone                                Legace for the latter.

Set-up:  Karen  Bannister will coordinate times.  They are usually 10:00 on Friday, and 8:00 on Saturday.                                           There will be more discussion at the November meeting.  We need 10 sturdy card tables.  Elaine

asked if there was a list of do’s and don’ts that could be made available to the set up people. A                                           schematic with   outlets would be helpful.  Yvonne asked where the shelving, etc. is kept and                                              Beth will bring those from the parish garage on Friday.

Music:  Denise Long will contact last year’s piano players and set up a schedule. Karen talked to the                                  Hancock Bell Ringers about performing again.  Their fee remains the same at $125.00.  Beth                                  made a motion to have them play again, with Yvonne. seconding.  The motion passed.

2.  Helping Hands – Joyce Schmidt reported that it has been very quiet lately.

3.  Community Supper – It is scheduled for April 23rd. Helen Limina will chair this activity. Since it is during school vacation, it was thought we could prepare less food this year.  It was questioned why we do not sponsor a dinner in Bennington or Antrim.  Antrim does not do Community Suppers, and we have done suppers in Bennington in the past.  It was suggested that we consider doing one in Bennington next year.

4.  Event Committee Chairs – Michelle asked for volunteers to head up our events with the following responses:

Christmas Potluck – Yvonne Murray and Elaine Giacomo

Mystery Ride/Dinner – Connie Lebel and Rebecca Marcella

Discussion ensued concerning this event.  Everyone seemed to like the idea of going back to                                House of Hope though Connie     said that if we did that again, the menu would be much simpler.                                The biggest drawback to this venue is that attendance has to be limited.  It was decided to bring                                           this up at the November meeting because the House of Hope would have to know by the first of                                     the year.  It would be held the second Monday of March.

First Communion – no chairman yet

Confirmation – Karen Ayers and Yvonne Murray

Commencement No one volunteered and it was thought to be early to plan anything.  This will be                                 discussed later in the year when the date gets closer.

5.  Secret Angels  - There was little response at the last meeting.  Should we continue?

The meeting was suspended at this point for refreshments which were provided by Edna Drasba, Rhea Taylor, and Sue Koziell and was resumed following the break. Michelle announced that $94.00 had been collected for the food pantry.

 New Business

 1.  Make and Take Crafts - This activity had its beginning in the evening craft group.  Connie Lebel, Joan Buck      and Grace Hartman have been working on this.  Connie explained the purpose and plans, passing out          flyers, and encouraging anyone interested to attend the first meeting on October 22nd.  It has been          expanded beyond the parish and will be held in the afternoons at the Peterborough Community Center.

2.  Michelle announced that Linda Caracappa is asking members of the Guild to save Shaw’s Cuisinart stamps and food labels for her. She collects and uses them for charity.

3.  Holiday Trees in Peterborough  - This event sponsored by the Peterborough Rec Department was brought up          by Lauren Martin.  She thought this would be a good opportunity to bring attention to our parish            especially if we chose a theme relating to “Christ in Christmas” and decorated our tree with religious            ornaments.  Sue Koziell volunteered to help Lauren, followed by Elaine Giacomo, Denise Long, Beth         McGurty, Ginny Chevlier, and Mary Ann Beard.

4.  Simone Legace suggested that we should give some money to the caregivers who bring handicapped clients         to Mass in recognition of their service.  However, it was pointed out that this was part of their jobs, and             they were not allowed to accept gifts.  Several suggestions including a special reception or recognition by Msgr. Gerry were made, but it was felt that the stairs present a problem and we should wait until we        are in the new church.

5.  Simone suggested having a Card and Game Night, but this idea had been put forth by Jean Frechette last year               and the response was discouraging.

6.  Denise suggested that we formally invite the Knights to our Christmas Potluck.  Karen so moved, seconded by       Beth, and the motion passed.

The meeting closed with a prayer by Elaine.

Minutes 2014/09

The 2014-15 year of the Divine Mercy Women’s Guild began on September 8 at 6:00 with a Mass offered by Msgr. Gerry followed by the annual Potluck Dinner and Business Meeting.  Dues were collected by Kathy Sullivan acting for Treasurer, Karen Bannister, who could not attend. President Michelle Urban welcomed everyone and introduced this year’s officers.  Lauren Martin led an icebreaker called Speed Talking.  This involved finding someone whom you did not know and talking for a brief time about a topic Lauren put on the board. There were several topics and everyone rotated with each one. A great way to meet people.  Elaine Giacomo said grace and 27 members, 1 guest, and Msgr. Gerry sat down to an enjoyable dinner.

Following dinner, Michelle called a short business meeting to order. She announced that several chairmen were needed for our regular events, although the chairmen for the Christmas Fair will remain essentially the same. She will check with Karen Bannister about being overall Holiday Stroll chairman again. Hostess Chairman, Janice McKenzie, requested that people sign up with her to be hostesses for the monthly meetings.

The date for the Christmas Potluck was announced as December 1st which is the first Monday of the month. This schedule change is because the regular meeting day, December 8th, is a Holy Day of Obligation and there will be a Mass upstairs. The need for a snow date was brought up, and Michelle will check with Gail Caron about scheduling it on the following evening, Tuesday, December 2nd, if we are snowed out on the 1st.

Karen Ayers explained the Craft Group meetings and invited anyone interested to join the group on the first and third Monday evenings of the month at 6:30.

The need for more aprons was brought up with no response.  Sue Koziell will order more if contacted. Connie Lebel will embroider owner’s names on the aprons if they are given to her with the member’s name clearly written out on paper and put in the pocket.

Secret Angels for last year were revealed, and the opportunity to sign up for this year was given.

To award the table centerpieces – decoupaged vases of flowers crafted by Cheryl Lastrina – Lauren gave a 10 question Divine Mercy Parish Quiz, with the flowers going to the person who got the most questions correct.

The meeting was closed with a prayer said by Elaine Giacamo.

Respectfully submitted.

Connie L suggested a “Guideline Booklet” or a handbook for members to reference who take on a committee chair position. It’s difficult to volunteer to help when at times we don’t know where to start. The booklet could contain a copy of the Guild by-laws, list of officers name and phone number, calendar, name of person/s who have chaired the committee in the past, special guests to remember to invite, and proper utilization of the treasurer. Guild members all seemed to agree this was a good idea. Jean suggested this discussion be continued at a future meeting.

Thank You to Helen L and Jackie C for tonight’s refreshments.

Christmas Fair Recap:

Linda and Cheryl said all went well with the raffle.

Beth reported the Café sold out of food and felt that was a “good thing” and the members agreed.

Janice said the Bake Table sold 22 cookie trays in addition to 6 small cookie trays given to the other churches in the Stroll. All leftover goodies were frozen and then used at the Peace Light reception.

The craft group did very well in sales. It was suggested the crafts should to be displayed in a more inviting way for sales. The umbrella works well for hanging ornaments. Rhea offered to teach us how to make her beautiful pinecone wreath for next year’s sales.

Blood Drive: 79 pints were collected during the December drive! Thank you to all who participated in this annual event.

Mystery Ride: Chairs Connie and Rebecca reminded members the buffet style Mystery dinner is on March 10th, snow date on March 11th.  27 members signed up. Cost is $25. The sign up list was passed around for review and money was collected.

New Business:

Empty Bowl Project: Janice reported for Helen on the Empty Bowl Project. This is an international project to fight hunger.  Crafters and potter create handcrafted bowls and guests are invited to a meal of soup. In exchange for a donation ($13) the guest is asked to keep the empty bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. Marcy P. is a parishioner who is also the art teacher at Merrimack High School. This year the Empty Bowl project is on March 26th at 6pm at the school.  Helen suggests we car pool or caravan to the school to support Marcy and this worthy cause.

Make up Christmas Party:  Discussion took place regarding the cancellation of the 2013 annual Christmas potluck party due to inclement weather. All agreed it was important we remain safe and that there would be no make up party.  Next year a “snow date” will be scheduled.

Program for February:  It was suggested Sister Kathleen speaks at a one of our meetings.

Nominating Committee: Chair Joyce asked for volunteers to join the committee. Denise, Beth and Linda volunteered. The positions of VP and Recording Secretary need to be filled. If you are interested please give Joyce a call.

Building Fund:  Beth and Linda shared information about the progress of the new church.  At this time there are no architectural drawings to share with the guild. The question was what do we want to do with the money set aside by the Women’s Guild? We currently have $6 thousand dollars in a mature CD and last year we set aside $3 thousand dollars. After much discussion it was moved and seconded to dedicate the funds to go toward a stove for the kitchen.

TD Bank: Connie met a TD bank rep while selling Guild holiday items at the St Patrick breakfast. Connie had positive comments about the breakfast and the bank reps information. It was suggested the representative be contacted and speak at our February meeting. Jean will look into this as a possibility.

An envelope was passed for a free will cash collection for the food bank.

Sue K is requesting any used holiday greeting cards to be saved for her. She will repurpose them into gift tags to be used for this years Christmas Giving Tree.

Thank You to Cheryl L., Linda C., and Lauren M for tonight’s refreshments.
